Atopic dermatitis/eczema (AD) frequently starts in infancy, has hereditary component and runs in families and is frequently associated with other allergic disorders such as food allergies, hay fever and asthma.

Patients with AD are more prone to certain viral and bacterial infections which can be severe and involve entire body and should never be vaccinated against smallpox. Contact dermatitis/eczema can be allergic or irritant and occurs upon repeated exposure to the offending agent. Patients with allergic skin disorders require very detailed examination and allergy evaluation, especially for food allergies and irritant allergen exposures. Contact dermatitis/eczema is, unlike AD, curable provided the triggering agent can be identified and eliminated from the environment.
